Nets is an acronym for Nurturing Education Through Sports. Our Missionis to utilize sports, specifically basketball, to enhance the lives of young men, young women, and their families while focusing on closing the achievment gap. Our Goal is to help our players become better people in addition to making them sound basketball players. Charlotte Nets AAU Basketball Team HistoryFounded in the early 1980's, the Charlotte NETS were originally known as the Charlotte Sonics. Over a span of 10 years the Sonics were considered the best AAU Basketball program in the state of North Carolina (NC), and one of the best in the country. Today, the NETS continue to maintain that tradition and are considered to be on e of the strongest, most highly respected, and consistent programs in not only North Carolina (NC), but among the AAU Boys Basketball Teams nationwide. Our coaches have attended College where they have had an opportunity to either play and/or learn how to teach the game. Each coach makes use of the excitement and prestige associated with playing for one of the state's best youth basketball programs as an incentive to motivate our athletes to excel. Not only as students but also as members of society. In addition, we try to teach character, fair play, and camaraderie to young men on and off of the court. What makes us different? We are committed to "Closing the Achievement Gap." One of the greatest pitfalls of youth competitive sports is that players, parents, and coaches can become preoccupied with winning games. The NETS are one of only a handful of nationally recognized AAU Baksteball programs that have grade requirements for participation. Which coincidentally was a major factor in Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools making 2.0 the mandatory minimum for student athletes. Since each of our coaches attended college, we encourage our players to develop a "Plan B" for their lives in addition to athletics. Through our Educational Development Program we provide various opportunities for parents and players. They include: - Mentorship
- Tutorials
- Youth substance abuse classes
- Community ourtreach programs
- Economic Empowerment Forums
- Basketball Tournaments
